What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling is the application of the Gospel to your life situations. It is the process in which a licensed counselor uses the tools of the mental health profession, the truths of the Bible, and the wisdom of life experience to help those in need.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I have a masters degree in counseling psychology and licensed by the Oklahoma Department of Health. The tools of the mental health profession include a wide range of techniques and assessment tools such as individual psychotherapy, marital, family, and group therapy, psychological testing, etc.
The truths of the Bible include all the teachings of Scripture but especially those that bear on our relationship with God and with one another. The Bible offers profound truths regarding human nature, sin, redemption, and grace. A Christian counselor measures all other concepts or ideas by the truths of Scripture. Though I am guided by these teachings, I do not impose my views on my clients but rather meet them where they are.
The wisdom of life experience is the learning that each counselor and client bring to the counseling situation to aid in the process of understanding or change.
Those in need are the clients who find their way to a counselor’s office. They are adults, children, couples, and families. They may be self-referred, or may come at the suggestion of a pastor, physician, loved one, former client, teacher, or friend. The needs they bring can range from being helped through a job change, to recovering from profound abuse.
I am committed to helping you develop a biblical worldview. I will not tell you what to think, but I will help you become aware of the core beliefs you hold that guide your thinking and actions. Then, I will help you learn to critically reflect on those assumptions and values as you evaluate yourself and all of life in light of Scripture.
As a biblical counselor, I will help you to rename your problems in biblical terms, and then rethink your responses and remedies according to Scripture. Together, we will reflect on your heart issues, and then explore the depths of Scripture related to those matters. I am truly committed to seeing you grow and to experience peace and hope.
